Change the domain of many links
Two actions on the Short URLs page change a domain on many links at once:
- Change destination domain is for when the website your links open has moved, for example from
old-site.comtonew-site.com. The short links stay the same. - Change short domain moves the short links themselves, for example from
ivi.to/springtogo.yourbrand.com/spring.
Both are in the More menu above the list, where they work on the whole workspace, and in the bar that appears when you tick links, where they work on the ticked links only. Both show a preview first, and nothing changes until you confirm. The workspace owner, Admins and Members can use them. Viewers can't edit links (see roles and permissions).
Change destination domain
This is on the Pro plan and above. On any plan you can still change one link's destination by editing the link.
Enter the old domain and the new one, then choose Preview. The preview shows how many links point at the old domain and the first ten with their new destination. Only the domain changes: the path, the query string and the rest of each address stay as they are.
Only that exact domain is matched. www.old-site.com and shop.old-site.com are separate domains, and the preview lists the ones your links use so you can change them too.
Besides the destination, the change covers each link's fallback URL, A/B destinations and targeting rules wherever they use the old domain. The new domain goes through the same safety check as any new destination, and a "broken" mark from the link checker about the old destination is cleared. The short links, their clicks and their QR codes stay the same.
Change short domain
This moves links to another short domain and keeps their code: ivi.to/spring becomes go.yourbrand.com/spring. It needs a plan with custom domains (Pro and above), and the domain you move links to must be verified and active (see set up a custom domain). Links can also move back to the shared domain.
From the More menu, choose the domain the links are on now (From) and the one they move to (To). From the selection bar you only choose To, and each ticked link moves from whichever domain it is on.
The old address stops working. The link itself moves, so anyone who opens the old short URL, including from a printed QR code, no longer reaches your page, and the old code becomes free for anyone to use. The link keeps its clicks, analytics and settings. If the old address is printed or widely shared, duplicate the link onto the new domain instead and leave the old one where it is.
The preview shows how many links will move, the first ten with their old and new address, and which links stay where they are and why:
- The same code is already in use on the new domain.
- The link fires retargeting pixels, which run only on your own domain, and only once that domain has a business name and a privacy policy link.
- When moving to the shared domain: a custom alias shorter than your plan allows there.
Large changes
Both actions work through the links a few hundred at a time while the dialog shows the progress. If it stops part way, the links already changed stay changed, and running it again finishes the rest. Each batch is recorded in the audit log, and with webhooks set up, each changed link sends a link.updated event.
